24 HOURS IN SALZBURG

We found Salzburg to be an absolute delight, and this is how we suggest spending one day in this Austrian city!

Check into the lovely Hotel Bristol Salzburg and start your day with a coffee at Mirabell Coffee Bar. Just a hop away is the Mirabell Palace & Gardens. As the Mirabell Gardens was an iconic shooting location for the famous film, “The Sound of Music,” (where Maria and the children dance around the Pegasus Fountain found in the gardens), it is a high-traffic area! This is why you should visit as early as you can in the day, as it will only become more crowded as the day goes on.

Then make your way across the Salzach to Salzburg Cathedral. Purchase tickets in advance to enjoy organ music at noon while taking in the gorgeous Baroque architecture! After this 30-minute musical performance, head to lunch at Gasthof Goldgasse for the best schnitzel we’ve ever had in our lives. (For context, we ate 10 schnitzels in 11 days, and this one was by far our favorite!)

After lunch, enjoy Salzburg’s Altstadt, or Old Town! This Old Town is one of our favorites, with international brands peppered amongst local authentic shops. We particularly loved all of the Christmas shops, and purchased more than a few ornaments! The Franciscan Church, St. Peter’s Abbey, and Mozart’s Birthplace can all be seen in Altstadt.

Next, use the late afternoon for trips to Stift Nonnberg and Hohensalzburg Fortress. Stift Nonnberg, or Nonnberg Abbey, is a Benedictine monastery with beautiful views looking out over the city. It is also where the real Maria von Trapp began her story. Hohensalzburg Fortress is only a seven-minute walk from Nonnberg Abbey, and also boasts of gorgeous aerial views of Salzburg.

End the evening with steaks at Maier’s, a small family-run restaurant. For additional information about the sites in this article, please read our article on Salzburg Must Sees!
