DAY TRIP: LILLE

Lille is the capital of the Hauts-de-France region, and just an hour away from Paris by train! I found there to be a lot of modern/industrial looking buildings when you start to branch out from the city center, but the incredibly sweet people, shops, and cobblestoned streets at the heart of Lille make this a lovely place to visit for the day! Here’s what I would do with that time:

After arriving in Lille via train, head to La Vieille Bourse. This building was once used for the Lille Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and is one of the gorgeous landmarks that this city holds. I stumbled upon a book market there when I was wandering around, which was super charming!

I am never one to wait for dessert, so I would next beeline over to Méert, an establishment which cemented itself in Lille in 1761 as a creator of high-quality sweet treats typical to the region. For example, their gaufres fourrée (thin waffles stuffed with a choice of a number of flavors) are absolutely heavenly. I myself partook in the spéculoos variety. I also purchased a small box of caramels (regretting the size of the box) and a box of pâtes de fruits, which was packed with fruit flavor.

Then take a stroll around Vieux Lille, or Old Lille, and Place aux Oignons! Super cute shops and corners await you. After loading up on bags from places like Gerard Darel and Sézane, reward yourself with the delicious vegan food from La Clairière. I had a veggie burger that was delicious!!

Fit some culture into your day with a visit to Le Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lille. On a weekday afternoon, it is not crowded and it is quite relaxing to take in all of the art when no one is around!

Before heading out, climb up the 400 steps of the Belfry of Lille to witness gorgeous 360-degree views of the city! Please note that after the first 100 steps, there is an elevator. However, it was out of order when I made the trek, so I climbed all 400! If this is a concern for you, I would reach out via email for confirmation that the elevator is in operation. The Belfry does have a cloakroom where you are able to store your items as you make your way up to the top. End your day right where you began at the train station, and take it wherever you’d like to go next!

Enjoy Lille!
