DUNLUCE CASTLE

Once the seat of Clan McDonnell who overthrew Clan McQuillan, only the remains of Dunluce Castle are left on a cliffside in Northern Ireland. While the first castle built at Dunluce was raised in the 13th century, the ruins that we see today are mainly from the 16th and 17th centuries. And although there are many castle ruins peppered throughout Northern Ireland, Dunluce Castle in particular is a nationally important archaeological site, which means it is protected from unauthorized change. You might have to use your imagination to think of what it looked like (and try to envision the kitchen, which fell into the sea at one point) but you can’t beat those views!

Dunluce Castle

Of course an old castle has to have a couple of ghosts hanging around. Some say that during a storm, you can hear the screams of the people who were in the kitchen when that room fell into the water. Others say there was a woman in white who stared out into the sea, and disappeared after someone living in the castle tried to speak to her.

If these stories do not scare you away, venture out to Dunluce Castle! At the time I am writing this, tickets are only 6 GBP per person, and both cash and credit cards are accepted. As Dunluce Castle is on the Causeway Coast and is only about a 10 to 15 minute drive from Giant’s Causeway, I recommend pairing the two for a lovely day by the sea!
