MØNS KLINT

Møns Klint consists of limestone and chalk cliffs along the Danish island of Møn. The cliffs stretch for six kilometers and rise more than 120 meters above sea level, overlooking the Baltic Sea. The stunning raw nature of Møns Klint has been revered by many, and was awarded a UNESCO World Heritage Site accreditation in July of 2025. With Møns Klint being a little under two hours by car from Copenhagen, it is quite the popular destination and I would highly recommend a visit!

At the top of Møns Klint, you will find the GeoCenter, a geological and natural history museum built into the cliff itself. This museum is a wonderful spot to learn more about the fossils you can find along the shore, and it is also a fabulous place to park! While there are several places that provide access down to the beach, the most popular is at Maglevandstrappen, near the GeoCenter Møns Klint. Take a bottle of water and wear proper shoes, as there are 497 wooden steps to walk down (which also means there are 497 steps to walk back up when you are done!)

Please note that if you have difficulty with stairs or prefer not to walk down, there is a long boardwalk at the top of Møns Klint that provides several lookout points. You do not have to be on the beach to enjoy the views! If you are indeed walking down the steps, you will be surrounded by greenery. At one point, you will be able to see the vertical white cliffs, and they are quite an arresting sight to behold. I myself had to stop so I wouldn’t trip on the steps!

Once you get to the bottom of the stairs, you can really take in the vertical majesty. 70 million years ago, this area was inhabited by squid, sea urchins, mussels, and more. Over millions of years, the skeletons from these creatures sank to the seabed and formed the layer of chalk that you see! This also means there are many fossils along the cliffs, and this makes for a great fossil hunt adventure! (You can also be like me and pick up rocks, erroneously thinking that they are fossils.)

And while the cliffs are obviously stunning, the Baltic Sea shouldn’t be ignored! On a clear day, the water close to the shore is light turquoise, which deepens to robust cerulean blue as your eyes look to the horizon – truly a sight to behold!

Møns Klint offers hiking, fossil hunting, breathtaking views, and spots to relax. Make the trip out to the seacoast today!
