SAGNLANDET LEJRE
Sagnlandet Lejre, or Lejre Land of Legends, was founded in 1964 to research the past and communicate these findings so that everyone has the opportunity to learn about our common past. Both a non-profit organization and an open-air archeology museum, Land of Legends offers 43 hectares of land to explore different houses and environments from the Stone Age, Iron Age, and Viking Age, as well as the 19th century. With Land of Legends just a 45-minute drive from Copenhagen, it is a wonderful way to spend a day!
The jewel of the Land of Legends is their Viking Hall, a recreation of the largest royal hall we know of from the Viking Age in Denmark. The remains of the original hall were found just three kilometers away in 2009, and provide us with great insight into Nordic architecture and craftsmanship from that time period.
Just a short distance away is the café, where you can find light fare. To the right of the café is a recreated Iron Age village, complete with Iron Age graves, a road, and a smithy. To the left of the café is a little lake and activities like archery, javelins, and a workshop. Behind the lake is another smithy, a textile workshop, and a pottery house. There is even pottery that you can purchase that is made on the premises!
There is a lot to explore at the Land of Legends, and a comprehensive map that is provided at the entrance. Spend the day here exploring on your own, bring a friend, or the whole family!
