CODORNÍU WINERY
If you are looking for a unique experience while you are in Spain, consider visiting a vineyard that produces cava! Cava is a sparkling wine from Catalonia, a region in northeastern Spain. The Spanish word cava means “cave” or “cellar,” as caves were used for cava production for the aging of wine. And if you are going to try cava, you might as well visit the oldest cava vineyard in Catalonia, Codorníu, just a 45-minute drive from Barcelona’s city centre.
Codorníu can actually trace its winemaking roots all the way back to 1551, when it was founded by Jaume Codorníu. It is considered the oldest family-owned winery in Spain, having been in the Raventós family since 1659 when Miquel Raventós married Anna Codorníu. In 1872, Josep Raventós created the first bottle of cava, and the rest is history. You can learn about this and more on a tour of the Codorníu property.
On your tour, walk back in time through the expanded winery designed by Josep Puig i Cadafalch, a Catalan modernist. Then go underground and experience a maze of cellars where the walls are lined with cava bottles. You will even have the opportunity to take a train tour through the labyrinth of cava! End the tour with a tasting of premium cavas, a peruse of the gift shop, and a meal at the restaurant on site.
The staff are extremely professional, kind, and knowledgeable. They are passionate about their product, and are eager for you to feel the same! Try a flute of cava today!
